Does my project require pre-approval required?

• Projects with incentives of $10,000 or more: Pre-approval is required before equipment is purchased or installed. Projects that proceed before receiving pre-approval are not eligible for incentives. A pre-installation inspection may be required.
• Projects with incentives under $10,000: Pre-approval is not required, but it is recommended to help ensure program compliance.

Note: Rocky Mountain Power has a lighting calculation software tool for retrofit projects. It is available for Wattsmart Business contractors to calculate project-specific energy savings, project economics, and eligible incentives for retrofit projects.

How to apply

1. Identify which fixtures to upgrade at your facility.

2. Determine if your project requires pre-approval.  

If your project requires pre-approval (incentives of $10,000 or more):

3. Submit the General Application and a completed IRS Form W-9.

4. Receive approval before purchasing or installing equipment. 

5. Purchase and install qualified fixtures or retrofit kits.

6. After installation is complete, submit invoices showing labor and material costs and any other required project documentation.

7. Receive your incentive check within 45 days after all required documentation has been received and approved.

If your project does not require pre-approval (incentives under $10,000): 

3. Purchase and install qualified fixtures or retrofit kits. 

4. After installation is complete, submit the General Application and a completed IRS Form W-9.

6. Receive your incentive check within 45 days after all required documentation has been received and approved.

1. Before you start your project, contact us or a Wattsmart® Business Contractor and complete a general application. Note: Projects started with building permits and pre-approval granted prior to March 31, 2022 may qualify for incentives under the previous program tariff. Projects started with building permits after March 31, 2022, or without pre-approval, will not qualify for incentives under the previous tariff. See details on Whole Building New Construction.
   
2. We provide project pre-qualification. Be sure you receive pre-qualification before you order equipment. You provide your tax ID in a completed W-9 form so we (or our program administrator) can prepare a 1099-Misc. (if required) following the incentive payment.
3. Complete your new construction or major renovation lighting project.
   
4. Submit project cost documentation including invoices with a breakdown of materials and labor. Then, contact Rocky Mountain Power, a post-installation inspection may be required.
5. Receive incentive check within 45 days of completion of step 4.

New construction/major renovation lighting incentives
