Costs vary depending on the vehicle and electricity rates. On average, it costs about $1 each time to charge a plug-in hybrid and $3-5 for a battery electric vehicle.

As more drivers make the switch to EVs, it’s important to understand when to charge your vehicle to have less impact on the environment and the energy grid. Energy usage is typically highest during the late afternoon and evening (also called "peak times"). Using more energy during peak times can result in increased electricity prices for everyone. 

Generally, the best times to charge your vehicle are during off-peak hours:

• During the middle of the day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when solar energy is abundant.
• After 10 p.m. when the demand for electricity is lower.

• Set your vehicle’s time scheduling function to charge your car after 10 p.m. when electricity demand is lower.
• Choose a Time of Use pricing plan that may help you save on bills when you charge your car and use other home equipment during off-peak hours.
