Emigration Canyon system resiliency

Improving safety and reliability

We’re taking actions to enhance reliability and reduce the risk of equipment-related wildfires. These steps include replacing aging overhead power lines in areas with higher wildfire risk with fire-resistant infrastructure, such as covered conductor, and undergrounding lines in some areas.

In total, 36 miles of line rebuild projects are underway in Emigration Canyon. These enhancements will help improve the reliability of our system as we adapt to the growing threat of wildfire in the West.

Project need and benefits

  • The Emigration Canyon projects will improve the safety and reliability of distribution lines to help prevent wildfires.
  • Burying lines underground limits the chance for vegetation to contact lines, enhancing community safety and service reliability.

Local impact

Construction on some of the projects in Emigration Canyon is underway:

  • Mountain Dell 11: Crews are continuing to install 28 miles of underground power lines in phases from 2021 through 2026.
  • Fort Douglas 13: The company will be installing 7.5 miles of underground line and about 0.5 miles of overhead covered conductor. The project is currently in progress, with construction expected to continue into 2026 and 2027.

Progress to-date

  • Mountain Dell 11: Crews have finished installing 16.7 miles of underground conductor over the past few years. The remaining sections will be completed in 2026.
  • Fort Douglas 13: The project team has completed engineering surveys and design, and they have secured permits. Technicians are performing electrical installation in conduits and underground vaults. Construction is expected to finish in phases in 2026 and 2027.

What's next

Mountain Dell 11 | 2026

  • For the remaining 11.2 miles of underground line installation, crews are currently installing conduits and vaults in some areas. Permits are being secured for other areas. The work is expected to finish in 2026.
