Rocky Mountain Power continues wildfire mitigation and system resiliency work on Casper Mountain 

CASPER, Wyo. — Rocky Mountain Power is continuing wildfire mitigation and electric system improvement work on Casper Mountain to help reduce wildfire risk, improve reliability and strengthen the electric system serving the area.

 The work is part of Rocky Mountain Power’s broader effort to enhance system resilience, protect public safety and reduce wildfire risk in high-risk areas. Crews and authorized contractors are completing work in phases, with activities that may include vegetation management, surveying and staking, pole replacement, covered conductor installation and placing some electric equipment underground where feasible. 

“Protecting customers and communities from wildfire risk is a shared responsibility, and Rocky Mountain Power is committed to working with the Casper Mountain community throughout this project,” said Colin Mckee, vice president of Wyoming for Rocky Mountain Power. “This work is designed to improve safety and reliability, increase awareness and help make Casper Mountain a safer place to live, visit and recreate.”  

Vegetation management is one of the most effective ways to reduce wildfire risk around power lines and electrical equipment. On Casper Mountain, trained tree crews are maintaining safe clearances between vegetation and electric facilities, which helps reduce safety hazards, outages and wildfire risk while allowing crews to safely inspect and operate the system. Rocky Mountain Power is committed to managing vegetation in a way that supports safety, reliability and the natural beauty of the area. 

The project also includes system improvements to support long-term safety and reliability. Some existing wood poles are being replaced with new wood or steel poles, covered conductor, also known as tree wire, is being installed in heavily vegetated areas, and project teams are evaluating where overhead or underground construction best supports safety, reliability, environmental considerations, property rights and wildfire mitigation objectives. 

Rocky Mountain Power is hosting a public information meeting tonight, Sept. 22, 2026, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Casper Mountain Trail Center. Community members are invited to learn more about the project, ask questions and speak with project representatives.
