Wattsmart® Business partners with businesses and other organizations to provide technical expertise and financial incentives to help them complete energy-efficient upgrade projects. Two businesses who have recently completed projects are Boeing West Jordan and Simplot Phosphates.
Boeing recently completed an upgrade associated with a plant expansion at their facility in West Jordan, Utah. Our Wattsmart program helped assist with the installation of an upgraded and highly automated LED lighting system that not only provides energy savings, but also improves lighting for employees.
They were awarded a check and plaque in recognition of their energy-efficiency upgrades and received over $65,000 in incentives to offset the project costs. The energy-efficient lighting will lead to an annual energy reduction of 516,984 kilowatt-hours. That is enough electricity to power 46 homes for a year, or to charge 44.5 million smartphones.
“The project provided a holistic approach to investigating and reducing energy consumption across multiple sites throughout the state of Utah, including lighting and energy-consumptive processes of all types. Boeing has been a tremendous partner in sharing their proactive approach to energy efficiency,” said Brad Knoles, regional business manager for Rocky Mountain Power.
Simplot Phosphates operates a phosphate ore mine in Vernal, Utah, and received more than $180,000 in Wattsmart incentives and bill credits for energy-efficient upgrade projects completed in 2023. Key completed projects included water pump upgrades and a new mill air compressor.
Simplot has been a Wattsmart Business partner for many years. Over the last five years, they’ve completed 16 Wattsmart projects to reduce energy usage by more than 17 million kilowatt-hours, equivalent to powering 21,500 homes for a year. Through these projects, they’ve realized total annual cost savings exceeding $1.2 million.
“Simplot Phosphates has been a great Wattsmart partner with Rocky Mountain Power. The Vernal facility has many creative employees who are always looking for ways to improve their operation and make it more efficient,” said Merlin Rushton, Rocky Mountain Power regional business manager. “Simplot-Vernal has an amazing culture of innovation and improvement that has been a pleasure to be a part of.”
