Keep bills low when cold winds blow

To reduce your home’s energy use this winter, start with these easy tips:

1. Set the thermostat no higher than 68°F when you are home. Lower the temperature when you are away from home and at bedtime.

2. Resist the temptation to bump up the thermostat when the outdoor temperature dips. That won't result in achieving the desired temperature faster. It will simply make the furnace run longer and use more energy.

3. Use space heaters sparingly and safely. Running a 1,500-watt portable heater 8 hours a day for 30 days can add an extra $30 to a winter month’s power bill.

4. Clean or replace furnace filters often during the heating season.

5. Weatherstrip exterior doors and caulk around window frames to seal air leaks.

6. Close drapes and blinds at night to keep heat in.

7. Wash clothes with cold water.

8. Use LED light bulbs throughout your home.

9. Set your water heater to 120°F and use efficient showerheads.

10. Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use.
