To encourage vehicle charging during off-peak hours, EV drivers in Utah can enroll in our Time of Use pricing option to take advantage of lower costs for charging your vehicle and using other home equipment when there is less demand for electricity.

Other Time of Day/Time of Use options are also available to customers regardless of whether they drive an electric vehicle. 

Costs vary depending on the vehicle and electricity rates. On average, it costs about $1 each time to charge a plug-in hybrid and $3-5 for a battery electric vehicle.

As more drivers make the switch to EVs, it’s important to understand when to charge your vehicle to have less impact on the environment and the energy grid. Energy usage is typically highest during the late afternoon and evening (also called "peak times"). Using more energy during peak times can result in increased electricity prices for everyone. 

Generally, the best times to charge your vehicle are during off-peak hours:

• During the middle of the day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. when solar energy is abundant.
• Overnight when the demand for electricity is lower – after 10 p.m. is best.
