Construction tips for tree preservation

Protect the root zone

  • Keep digging, grading and heavy equipment outside the dripline (the edge of the tree’s canopy).
  • Avoid compacting soil or cutting major roots whenever possible.

Set a no work zone

  • Mark and fence the area under the canopy to prevent driving, storage or excavation.

Prevent physical damage

  • Keep equipment clear of the trunk and branches.
  • Have a qualified arborist perform any necessary clearance pruning.

Store materials away from trees

  • Do not pile soil, gravel or construction materials against the trunk or over roots.

Tunneling vs. trenching

Trenching

  • An open cut made in the ground for installing utilities.
  • Often cuts through major roots, which can compromise tree health and stability.

Tunneling (Boring)

  • A horizontal bore placed under the root zone with minimal surface disturbance.
  • Preferred method because it avoids cutting large roots and reduces stress on the tree.
