Rocky Mountain Power to begin wildfire mitigation project in Big Cottonwood Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY - Rocky Mountain Power will replace segments of overhead power lines in Big Cottonwood Canyon with underground conduit and upgrade existing overhead systems to withstand weather and environmental conditions to help prevent wildfires and provide safe, reliable power to the communities we serve.

The company advises drivers and recreation users to plan ahead for construction impacts in Big Cottonwood Canyon, along State Road 190 (S.R. 190) throughout the summer, beginning in May.

Crews will work on mile-long segments of roadway at a time, starting at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and continuing toward Brighton Resort. During construction, drivers can expect the roadway to be reduced to one lane and controlled by flaggers. Drivers will experience increased traffic in the area and delays of up to 15 minutes. Construction is anticipated to last until August 2022.

While traveling through work zones, drivers and recreation enthusiasts are advised to adhere to traffic control operations and follow the directions of traffic flaggers. Access to parking at trailheads and picnic areas may be reduced or restricted due to construction impacts.
