  • Turn off computers and use "sleep mode" when not in use. Get details on activating power management settings on your computer. It's best to get in the habit of turning off your computer at night or when it is not being used. Switching a computer on and off throughout the day or week will not negatively affect its lifetime. This is a common misconception that carries over from the days of older mainframe computers.
  • Unplug laptop and tablet battery chargers when not in use. Even after being fully charged, these adapters may continue to draw power.
  • Many appliances continue to draw power when they are switched off, but still plugged in. In the average home, 75 percent of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Unplug the appliance or use the switch on a power strip.
  • When shopping for a new computer, look for the ENERGY STAR® label. In Wyoming, earn a cash incentive for purchasing an ENERGY STAR desktop computer and monitor.
