Grand County School District

Grand County School District biomass project

In 2016, Grand County school district, located in Moab, Utah, flipped the switch on the first distributed biomass project in Rocky Mountain Power’s service. The 60-kilowatt low-emissions biomass system converts waste vegetable oil from local restaurants into renewable energy for the school.

In addition to providing an onsite laboratory for students, the project is expected to supply about 45 percent of the school’s power needs, divert excess heat to be used onsite, and help manage demand during peak periods. The project also protects local landfills from the large quantity of restaurant waste oil created by Moab’s tourism industry.
