Electric System Information
Understanding the system that empowers our lives
Our electric system is designed and built to deliver safe, reliable power to customers in Idaho, Utah and Wyoming. As part of PacifiCorp, we have more than 10,894 megawatts of generation capacity from a mix of coal, hydro, renewable wind power, gas-fired combustion turbines, solar and geothermal.
Once generated, electricity is instantaneously delivered to our customers through a complex network of transmission and distribution lines. PacifiCorp owns thousands of miles of transmission and distribution lines – more than any other single entity in the West.
The company’s Energy Gateway initiative is adding more than 2,000 miles of new high-voltage transmission line to improve system reliability and deliver energy from new wind-powered and other generating resources.
PacifiCorp operates its transmission grid within the real-time market that went live in November 2014. The energy imbalance market was created by PacifiCorp and the California Independent System Operator, the two largest transmission providers in the Western U.S. The EIM uses a sophisticated system to automatically balance demand every five minutes with the lowest cost energy available across the seven-state combined grid.
The EIM leverages the growing diversity of renewable resources, flexible backup resources and demand using advanced technology to keep energy supply affordable and reliable.
