Segment C - Mona to Oquirrh

Project Overview

Within the overall Energy Gateway expansion area, Northern Utah represents the fastest growing area in Utah and one of the major growth areas within the region. New transmission lines and substations are necessary to provide additional capacity to serve the growing electrical demand of customers and to improve reliability and operational flexibility of the electrical system. These additional transmission facilities are also needed to prepare for future generation resources.

On behalf of PacifiCorp, we are committed to providing safe, reliable, cost-effective power and has proposed a project to establish a new high-voltage transmission line and two future substations in Utah. The line will originate at a substation to be built near the existing Mona Substation, outside Mona in Juab County, and run north to another future substation. The line then will split and connect to Oquirrh Substation in West Jordan and to Terminal Substation in Salt Lake City. As part of the company's long-range planning, this project also includes the identification of a corridor for a future high-voltage transmission line. This project will traverse the areas around the communities of Cedar Fort, Eureka, Grantsville, Mona, Salt Lake City, South Jordan, Stockton, Tooele and West Jordan.

Additional Information About the Project

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently developing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on the company's right of way application for this project – a process that began in fall 2007 with public scoping meetings. The draft EIS was published May 15, 2009. This was the first opportunity for both our company and the public to see the draft analysis on proposed and alternate routes, including some new BLM-suggested routes. The BLM conducted a public comment period for 90 days. During this time, meetings were held by both the company and the BLM to collect feedback on the draft EIS. The Final Environmental Impact Statement is now being routed for approval within BLM, and public posting is anticipated in Spring 2010. Visit the BLM Web site for more information on this process. Conditional Use permits for the projects have been filed in all applicable cities and counties. The certificate of public convenience and necessity has been filed with the Utah Public Service Commission.

Newsletters (PDF) will be sent periodically to landowners and other interested parties. Additional information about this segment also will be posted on this Web site as the project progresses and details are developed. Please check back for updates, including the current Mona to Oquirrh fact sheet (PDF) and  map (PDF).

Public Participation

Project materials and newsletters (PDF) have been sent to nearly 10,000 landowners and others.

Public input is an important part of the transmission line development process and is welcomed at all stages. Our company and the Bureau of Land Management held six open house meetings in June 2009 as part of the environmental review process for this project. The June meetings were held in Tooele, Nephi, West Jordan and Magna. Additional meetings were also held August 2009 with various interested parties in Tooele for input on routing issues.
