Energy's Role in Economic Growth

Inside a business

It’s no secret that economic growth and energy use go hand in hand. The cost and availability of electric power is among the key factors businesses must consider when deciding where to start up, relocate or expand their operations.

Rocky Mountain Power is supporting economic growth in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho by ensuring access to safe, reliable and affordable electric service – which provides businesses with a competitive advantage and assists in attracting new commerce and industry.

In a recent Newsweek article, “cheap energy” was mentioned as part of the reason Utah has been able to successfully attract new businesses during a time when most states have struggled economically.

Just last week, our economic development manager, Bill Comeau, joined other members of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce’s “Salt Shakers,” U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch and others to welcome a new high tech business to the area. (Bill’s the dark-haired guy with the big scissors in KSL’s video report.)

We’re investing nearly $20 billion over the next decade to create the energy infrastructure that businesses and communities will need in the future while providing employment opportunities today. This includes approximately 2,000 miles of new transmission lines we’re building across the West to serve our customers.

Years ago, when our grandparents saw new power lines going up, most considered it a sign of progress. Today, electricity continues to serve an essential role in keeping our communities great places to live, work and play.
