Company president talks future electricity prices

Richard Walje

While we don’t have a crystal ball to gaze into and see the future, Rocky Mountain Power’s leaders do have a good idea about what to expect during the next 10 years when it comes to serving customers’ growing electricity needs and the impact on prices. We’ve been straightforward about the fact that while our customers pay among the lowest prices for electricity in the nation, increasing energy use and more stringent environmental requirements will unavoidably mean higher prices over the next decade.

Company president Richard Walje recently set out to help inform Utah residents and businesses about what to expect, and to explain the reasons for anticipated price hikes. His opinion column titled “Utah’s electricity prices can remain among the lowest in the world” (PDF) first ran in the Salt Lake Tribune on Feb. 13, and has been submitted to other newspapers around the state. A similar opinion column has been submitted to newspapers in Idaho (PDF). In addition to laying out the facts about the factors driving prices up, he also reassures customers that Rocky Mountain Power is working hard to continue providing safe and reliable electric service at the lowest possible cost.

We know price increases are never welcome, but understanding why they are sometimes necessary – and what you can do to make a difference – can shed new light on how you view your electricity bill now and in the years ahead.
