Commercial Lighting Supply Makes Blue Sky Part of its Green Strategy
July 22, 2009
SALT LAKE CITY — Commercial Lighting Supply receives recognition every year for its work helping companies become more energy efficient. But the lighting supply company offsets its own energy use by buying Blue Sky renewable power.
“Blue Sky is one of the ways we walk the talk,” said Mark Barton, president of Commercial Lighting Supply Inc. “We sell lighting retrofits and recycle florescent lamps; but we also do our share by investing in renewable power with Blue Sky. Blue Sky is a key part of our overall green business strategy.”
Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky is sold in 100 kilowatt-hour block increments for as little as $1.95 per month. Commercial Lighting Supply is buying 58 blocks of Blue Sky a month, which over a 12-month period avoids the emission of 42 tons of carbon dioxide. It has the same benefit as planting 3,650 trees or not driving a car 86,000 miles.
The Blue Sky program provides Rocky Mountain Power customers an easy way to support wind and other renewable energy facilities in the region, including community-based projects.
When a customer enrolls in Blue Sky, the company purchases renewable energy credits on behalf of the consumer from wind energy facilities in the region. Blue Sky funds also help support the development of smaller projects in local communities that can include wind, solar, geothermal, low-emission biomass or other certified renewable energy sources. More than 30,600 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho currently buy Blue Sky renewable energy.
Separate from Blue Sky, Rocky Mountain Power is investing in cost effective renewable energy to serve its customers through company-owned generation and renewable energy purchases. Electricity from wind energy facilities helps meet customers’ growing electricity needs and increases the diversity of Rocky Mountain Power’s generation portfolio.
Through the Blue Sky program, the company and its customers are working together to support the development of renewable energy resources even more.
“Renewable energy is an important, growing part of Rocky Mountain Power’s energy mix,” said said Alene Bentley, customer and community manager for Rocky Mountain Power. “Blue Sky provides a simple, convenient way for businesses and residential customers to support renewable energy even more.”
In addition to its Blue Sky purchase, Commercial Lighting Supply is an ally in Rocky Mountain Power’s Energy FinAnswer program.
“With Energy FinAnswer, businesses can get cash incentives to upgrade their commercial or industrial heating, cooling, refrigeration, compressed air, lighting, pumping or industrial processes,” said Barton.”
