Utah high school seniors tapped for distinguished scholarship program

Rocky Mountain Power Foundation funds scholarships

SALT LAKE CITY – Feb. 15, 2007 –Fifty Utah high school seniors are recipients of distinguished Horatio Alger Association scholarships and will receive $2,500 toward their higher education, thanks to the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation.

The winning students demonstrated success by maintaining their grades; participating in extracurricular activities; and taking an interest in their community while overcoming difficult personal circumstances. The scholarships are made possible by the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, which has funded $125,000 in scholarships to assist Utah students in attaining a college education.

"We believe that students, who have faced adversity in their lives but who also have proven that they can excel academically while taking an interest in their community, are deserving of our support," said Richard Walje, chairman of the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation. "The Rocky Mountain Power Foundation is pleased to recognize these talented students with scholarships so that a college education and a solid academic foundation are within their reach."

This is the first year the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation has sponsored scholarships in Utah. The Rocky Mountain Power Foundation, the charitable arm of electric utility Rocky Mountain Power, has partnered with the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Inc., an organization comprised of Americans who have overcome adversity and humble beginnings to achieve success.
