ALBANY, Ore. — The Lawyers’ Campaign for Equal Justice received $10,000 from the PacifiCorp Foundation’s Pacific Power Fund
to help its legal aid staff extend outreach and education efforts to 40,000 indigenous Mexican and Central American farm workers
who make up a growing part of Oregon’s agricultural workforce.
Mixtecos, Triquis, Zapotecos and many other groups of indigenous peoples entering the farm labor workforce rarely speak English
and many speak only the most basic Spanish. Staff from the Lawyers’ Campaign for Equal Justice will build bridges to this
community, providing information about wages and working conditions, particularly healthcare and work safety. Outreach will
take place in person, through audiotapes in several languages and on the radio.
The PacifiCorp Foundation’s Pacific Power Fund recently awarded more than $72,600 to Oregon civic and community programs.
These grants are one of four annual cycles of funding for programs in education, health and human services, arts and culture,
and civic and community betterment.
