GRANTS PASS, Ore. — The PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning, a fund endowed by Pacific Power, has awarded $5,000 to the Boys
and Girls Club in Grants Pass for its Project Learn/Learning Enhancement and Assessment Program. The foundation has been supporting
the program since 2003.
Project Learn provides 25-35 hours per week of quality after-school programs, including leisure reading, writing activities,
homework help and games that develop cognitive skills in children. Studies have shown that Project Learn has had a dramatic
effect on academic achievement: participants have shown an 11 percent increase in overall grade point average, compared to
youth in other after-school programs. Project Learn currently takes place in selected Oregon, Utah and Wyoming Boys and Girls
Clubs.
The Boys and Girls Club in Grants Pass hosts as many as 350 young people each day. Its programs and activities focus on five
core areas including art, education, leadership, health and life skills, and social and physical recreation. It supplements
its programs and activities with field trips to local museums, swimming pools, hiking and biking trails, libraries and other
family destinations. PacifiCorp Foundation’s funds will be used to pay for program supplies, incentives, books, field trips
and staff salaries.
“These funds are going toward outstanding programs run by people who are working to improve the lives of our fellow citizens,”
said Monte Mendenhall, regional community manager for Pacific Power. “We believe we have a stake in the communities we serve,
and this is one way Pacific Power can help.”
The PacifiCorp Foundation was created and incorporated in 1988 in order to become the major channel of philanthropy for PacifiCorp
and its business units, including Pacific Power. PacifiCorp and its employees have a long tradition of active involvement
in the communities served by Pacific Power, including charitable contributions, sponsorships of community events and in-kind
donations.
