SUTHERLIN, Ore. — Sutherlin’s $1.3 million library renovation project received a $5,000 boost from Pacific Power’s charitable
arm, the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning. The funds will be used to create the new “PacifiCorp Technology Center” at the
library.
“The Sutherlin Library is the busiest branch in the Douglas County system,” said Bud Schmidt, Sutherlin city manager. “Sutherlin
has been the fastest growing city in Douglas County for the past seven years, a trend that shows no sign of changing.”
The 3,600 square-foot C. Giles Hunt Memorial Library was built in 1987 to serve 4,000 people. Sutherlin’s current population
is 7,500, and the library now serves 12,000 in the county.
An $800,000 bond to build a 6,545 square-foot addition and renovate the existing building was approved by voters in 2004.
Schmidt said that the project could get underway by fall with completion in 2007.
“We’ve generated $600,000 in donations so far from various foundations, and we appreciate PacifiCorp for joining the effort,”
Schmidt said.
“Contributing to this local effort fits well with our mission to promote learning and build communities,” said Monte Mendenhall,
regional community manager for Pacific Power.
