BEND, Ore. — Bend’s Working Wonders Children’s Museum received a $2,800 grant from the PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning
to help make the museum accessible to low-income families, as well as children on free and reduced lunch programs. The PacifiCorp
Foundation is the charitable arm of Pacific Power.
“When community budgets become tighter, cultural and arts programs often suffer,” said Angela Jacobson, regional community
manager for Pacific Power. “We believe supporting this type of a program is an important, integral part of a well-rounded
education; so we think it’s a smart investment.”
Recent statistics reveal that in Central Oregon, nearly one-half of children are not "school ready" when they reach kindergarten.
Deschutes Co. Commission Children and Families has named Working Wonders as a partner in addressing this critical issue, playing
an important role in meeting the developmental and educational needs of the children in our region. Foundation funds would
be applied to underwrite museum admissions, special Family Nights, as well as transportation.
Founded in 2002, Working Wonders is the only venue of its kind serving the children and families in Central Oregon. In 2004,
Working Wonders opened its permanent space in Bend’s historic Old Mill District. During the past year, more than 30,000 children
and adults have visited the museum.
The PacifiCorp Foundation awarded close to $205,800 to arts and cultural nonprofit programs in its service area, and donated
another $13,000 in small community grants.
Jacobson said that, according to research, less than 21 percent of Oregon children engage in any art form due to diminished
school budgets and class offerings. The Foundation’s arts and culture grants are one of four groups of awards each year. Other
award categories include education, civic and community groups, and health and human services.
The Foundation’s mission is to foster strategic sustainable learning initiatives that serve the best aspirations of individuals,
organizations and communities, and that enhance and develop their capabilities to address significant challenges and opportunities.
