GE Healthcare
, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), announced that the company’s Salt Lake City site, which manufactures surgical
imaging and navigational equipment, is helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions to the environment by buying Blue Sky from Rocky
Mountain Power.
GE Healthcare
recently became a partner of the Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program, which buys energy from renewable sources, primarily
wind. As a result, for as long as the Salt Lake City site is a Blue Sky partner, emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse
gas, will be reduced by 900 metric tons or 20.7 percent per year.
"This program serves as a unique opportunity to promote a better community where we live, work and do business," said Laura
King, Vice President and General Manager, Interventional, Cardiology & Surgery for GE Healthcare
. According to Rocky Mountain Power, GE Healthcare’s reduction in carbon dioxide emissions will be equal to driving 1,927,500
fewer miles a year or planting 354 acres of trees, which remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
By increasing the amount of renewable energy GE buys from 10 percent of its annual electricity use to 20.7 percent, the company
is also eligible to participate in the program as a Green Power Partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. EPA’s
Green Power Partnership provides assistance and recognition to organizations that demonstrate environmental leadership by
choosing green power. In addition, participation in Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky Program is consistent with GE’s Environment,
Health and Safety objectives.
